Are Oral B Or Sonicare Electric Toothbrushes Better?

Electric toothbrushes are scientifically demonstrated to remove more plaque than manual toothbrushes. They are less difficult to use as they supply the brushing action for you, and can have many additional features to optimise brushing and give you dentist clean teeth. There are numerous types of electric toothbrush on the market so it should be straightforward to get a brush that fits your oral health wants. The 2 best selling brands, Oral-B and Sonicare have a selection of electric brushes at varying costs that have some different features. So which is better, an Oral B or Sonicare Electrical Toothbrush?

Braun Oral-B range retails from £44.99 to £169.99 and has electrical toothbrushes with circular brush heads that rotate with an oscillating motion. The premium brushes have numerous modes for delicate teeth, massaging of gums and whitening of tarnished teeth. Pressure sensors tell the user when they are brushing with too much force and may damage the teeth and gums; the high range brushes have an identifiable pressure sensor that lights up to tell the user to cut back pressure, the lower range brushes make an audible sound.

Every brush in the range has a timer so teeth can be brushed to the ideal (dentist counseled) 2 minutes cleaning. A quadrant placer function will see the brush stutter every half minute to inspire you to move to a different area of the mouth, therefore achieving optimum cleaning of the whole area.

The entire range is compatible with multiple brush heads so the user can select whichever they like. The more expensive brushes in the range include a brush head holder, lavatory storage unit and a travel case and charger.

The premium range Victory 5000 is recommended by The Brit Dental Health Foundation and has received the highest award of any toothbrush on the market. Its outlining feature is the wireless digital Smart Guide unit, which has a Star Reward system to encourage brushing. The unit also has a timer, pressure alert, quadrant prompt and ‘replace brush head ‘ indicator and wireless syncs with the toothbrush to give real-time feedback on teeth cleaning. The Star Reward system consists of 5 stars that illuminate one by one as teeth are brushed, giving a 5 star rating when brushed properly in the allocated time.

The Philip’s Sonicare range sells from £19.99 to £249.99 and has electric toothbrushes with diamond shaped brush heads that palpitate from side to side, not with an oscillating movement. The brushes use Philip’s patented sonic cleaning action, which claims to get rid of more plaque than any other electric toothbrush. Like the Oral-B range, the more expensive brushes have many delicate, massaging and lightening modes to take care of teeth and gums, but the range does not include the advanced pressure sensor technology. Sonicare electric toothbrushes have timers for thorough mouth cleaning, and the quadrant placer, where the toothbrush will stutter to tell the user to head off to a different area of the mouth. The interchangeable brush heads are not compatible with different brushes in the range so specific heads must be bought for each type. Philips is developing a new green brush head but this is still in production. The most costly brush in the range, the Sonicare Diamond Clean, is considerably dearer than its Oral-B counterpart but lasts for an impressive three weeks when charged, has a very modern slim-line design and comes with a trendy glass charger and USB travel case/charger.
